Are you interested in starting yoga but feel like you need clarification on the different styles? Or maybe you’re wondering; can beginners do restorative yoga? Here we’ll give an overview of the differences between restorative yoga, yin yoga and other styles of yoga to help you decide which classes you will benefit from the most.
What does a restorative yoga class involve?
At SoHo Yoga, we offer several different styles of yoga including restorative yoga. If you are looking for a restorative yoga studio in Brisbane, here’s what to expect when you sign up for one of our ‘Relax and Restore’ classes:
All Levels Welcome
Restorative yoga is suitable for all levels from beginners to advanced yogis. No previous yoga experience is required, and you don’t need to be fit or flexible to do restorative yoga. Everyone can benefit from this deeply nourishing style of yoga.
Focus on Relaxation
You will be gently guided into easy, supported poses to completely relax the body. Once in the pose you will be offered breathing and meditation techniques to help calm the mind and restore energy levels at the end of a busy week.
Yoga Sleep
You will finish with a guided meditation known as Yoga Nidra, or Yoga Sleep. Practiced lying down and supported by props, this is the ultimate deep relaxation technique. Just 20 minutes of Yoga Nidra is said to be equivalent to 3 hours sleep.
Other Benefits
As a mental health aware and informed yoga studio, we know that many yoga students report practicing yoga for mental health reasons. Restorative yoga also regulates the nervous system and can help to manage stress and anxiety and other mental health concerns.
If you like the sound of restorative yoga, you might also enjoy our Release & Relax classes, our Monthly Meditation classes, and our yin yoga classes.
What is the difference between restorative yoga and yin yoga?
Yin yoga is also suitable for beginners and can be very relaxing. However, while they share many similarities and benefits there are a few key differences between restorative yoga and yin yoga
Focus on Stretching
Yin Yoga involves long holds in the poses for a deep stretch targeting the connective tissues. It can help greatly improve flexibility and mobility.
Promote the Flow of Chi
Yin Yoga is based on the Chinese meridian system and is designed to promote the flow of Chi (energy) through the body and nourish the essential organs.
Ready for more physical exercise?
If you’re ready to combine the meditative, relaxation and rejuvenating effects of yoga with more movement and strength building, we also offer several flow style yoga classes.
Vinyasa Yoga
Fluid and flowing in style and connecting movement with breath, this class will leave you feeling energised and glowing. Some yoga experience is recommended.
Slow Flow
With slower transitions between the poses and a nourishing focus, slow flow is suitable for all ages and levels. Recommended for complete beginners
VinYin
A perfect balance of movement and stillness. Start with an energising flow and transition into a nourishing yin sequence for a deep meditative stretch. Some yoga experience recommended.
