What is the difference between Vinyasa YTT and other 200hr yoga teacher trainings?
Vinyasa is a Sanskrit term that refers to mindfully and systematically progressing from one yoga asana (posture) to the next while connecting each movement with breath. It is a more fluid, flowing style of yoga asana practice than e.g., traditional hatha yoga, or Iyengar yoga.
While all 200 hour yoga teacher trainings will include yoga history & philosophy and anatomy & physiology, the key differentiator between most courses will be the style of yoga asana taught.
You may already be familiar with different styles of yoga asana, but always consider trialling a studio or practicing with the director of training before committing to a YTT.
Vinyasa is a broad term and even vinyasa yoga teacher trainings will vary greatly; from strong powerful practices incorporating advanced yoga asana, to slower, more mindful, alignment focused practices.
What is the difference between classical yoga philosophy and Tantric yoga philosophy?
Another key differentiator between yoga teacher trainings will be the philosophical context. While all yoga schools and traditions evolved from the same source texts, two primary philosophies emerged.
Traditional or classical yoga schools teach that spirit and matter are separate, and that spirit is superior to matter. This is known as ‘dual’ philosophy. Tantric yoga schools teach that matter is a continuity of spirit and that both are equally divine. This is known as ‘non-dual’ philosophy.
One of the core teachings of Tantra is ‘bring everything to the path’. Instead of rejecting different aspects of life to transcend the body, you embrace and integrate them. Through the body you start to transform your inner world and awaken to the Divine spirit that you are.
Many modern vinyasa yoga schools adopt the arguably more accessible and inclusive Tantric concept of embodiment, so it is worth researching and deciding which philosophical path most resonates with you before committing to a YTT.
